Details of the Initiative

In recent years, as an action against climate change, various countries have advanced projects to realize a “smart city,” an environmentally friendly future city for realizing decarbonization.

Japan especially strives to use smart cities that apply new technologies such as AI and IoT for community development in order to realize Society 5.0, the next-generation society. Meanwhile, generative AI such as ChatGPT is in the spotlight in AI applications. However, there are concerns that it takes a large amount of computing time and it will immensely increase the energy consumption of data centers in the future. Therefore, the realization of a smart city requires the use of Green AI, which can obtain high-quality results without increasing the amount of computation.

According to the above background, the Fukuyama Laboratory conducts the following research using Green AI to realize a smart city, and students present it to national and international conferences.

(1) Optimization of the operation of energy facilities in various fields to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions throughout a smart city.

(2) Optimization of the operation of energy facilities to reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption in buildings and factories as well as optimization of production planning of factories in consideration of the reduction of energy cost

(3) Optimization of stock column utilization of vending machines to reduce the number of deliveries to vending machines

(4) Anomaly detection and explanation of detection results of gas turbines, hydroelectric facilities, refrigerated and frozen showcases, etc.
