Details of the Initiative
In recent years, Japan has seen a rise in the number of foreign residents, leading to an increase in the number of children with a foreign background. Despite this, the educational environment for these children is still not sufficiently developed. It is essential to ensure that children have the educational opportunities they need to freely envision their future. Imagine, for example, a youth who wants to pursue a career that requires a university education. In FY 2022, while 75% of all high school graduates in Japan proceeded to university or other higher educational institution (including junior college, specialized training college, and other institutions), only 46.6% of those who need Japanese language support went on to these institutions.*
Therefore, my research investigates the experiences of young people with a foreign background as they go through the process of attending high school and university in Japan, finding employment, and ultimately gaining confidence to carve out their own lives, along with what factors have influenced them. In the future, based on my research findings, I aim to provide essential information to young people with a foreign background who have chosen to receive education and live in Japan, as well as to the teachers and supporters around them, with the goal of creating an environment where they can freely choose their career path and pave their own way in life.
My research also includes a survey report on the university entrance examination system and admissions process for students with foreign roots.
